2023-08-31, the European Union issued the Energy efficiency requirements for mobile phones, cordless phones and tablets Regulation (EU) 2023/1670 and Energy efficiency Labelling Regulation (EU) 2023/1669, the energy efficiency regulation will be enforced on 2025-06-20.
Smartphones and tablets will have to display information about their energy efficiency, battery life, dust and water resistance, and protection against accidental drops. This is also the first time that products on the EU market have been required to display a repairability score.
This energy label will help EU consumers make more informed and sustainable purchasing choices and encourage sustainable consumption.
The Energy Efficiency Requirements Regulation (EU) 2023/1670 includes the following key requirements:
- Requires resistance to accidental drops or scratches, and dust and water resistance
Batteries that are durable enough, such as those in smartphones and tablets, to withstand at least 800 charge and discharge cycles and maintain at least 80% of their initial capacity
- Availability of long-term operating system upgrades (at least 5 years after product launch)
- For smartphones and tablets, professional repairers have undifferentiated access to any software or firmware required for replacement
- Requirements of the disassembly and repair rules, including the manufacturer's obligation to make critical spare parts available within 5-10 working days of the end of the product model's sale on the EU market, within 7 years
- For cordless phones, the base station base shipped with cordless phones, regardless of whether the phone handset is placed on the base station, the power consumption of the network standby mode cannot exceed 1W. For charging bases without base station functions shipped with cordless phones, the power consumption in standby mode cannot exceed 0.6W when the phone handset is placed on the charging base, and the power consumption in standby mode cannot exceed 0.3W when the phone handset is not placed on the charging base
The Energy Efficiency Labelling Regulation (EU) 2023/1669 includes the following key requirements:
The energy efficiency rating of a smartphone or tablet should be determined based on its Energy Efficiency Index (EEI), as shown in Tables 1 and 2
The repeated free fall reliability rating of a smartphone or tablet should be determined based on the number of falls without defects, as shown in Table 3
The repairability rating of a smartphone or tablet computer shall be determined according to the repairability index, as shown in Table 4
Energy efficiency labels for smartphones and tablets should include the following information: (i) QR code
(ii) trade mark
(iii) Model Number
(iv) Energy efficiency level ladder from A to G
(v) Letter corresponding to the energy efficiency rating
(vi) Battery life in each cycle
(vii) Repeat the free-fall reliability rating
(viii) Repairability level
(ix) The number of cycles the battery
(x) IP rating
(xi) Regulation number
